Dr. Marcia Elise Baker

July 24, 1953 - July 18, 2010

Dr. Marcia Elise Baker, age 56, died at her home in Grosse Pointe from a rare sarcoma on July 18. Until her illness forced her to retire, her practice in internal medicine was in Mount Clemens where she was on staff for 15 years at Mount Clemens Regional Medical Center. Medicine was her calling and she practiced it assiduously, even making house calls. Marcia embraced life, playing harder and laughing more than most. A voracious reader who consumed several books a week, she continued to take graduate courses in theology via the Internet while undergoing extensive surgery and chemotherapy. She was devoted to Dr. Claudia Osborn, her life partner of 25 years. She took delight in her dog, Rafi, her pen and ink drawings, and traveling everywhere including to Naples, Fla. where she and Claudia have a home. Her father, the Rev. Wilson Baker, preceded her in death. In addition to Claudia, she is survived by her mother Elaine, her sisters, Monica (Larry) Thornburg and Teresa (Michael) Layman; nephews Layne (Abby) and Matthew, and niece Amanda. She also leaves behind Claudia’s family: Richard and Jeanne Findlater, William and Beverly Osborn, Christopher Findlater, Joan Klipping, Jeffrey (Diana) Osborn, and Victoria (Dan) Boulger. Her memorial service will be at her parish, St. John’s Episcopal Church in Royal Oak on her birthday, Saturday, July 24 at 10 a.m. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to St John’s Episcopal Church, Open Hands Food Pantry or to Doctors without Borders. The family will receive friends at Marcia and Claudia’s home in Grosse Pointe on Wednesday, from 5-8 p.m.
